History Provided by The Harpersfield Historical Society

The history of Harpersfield began with a meeting between the Harpers and the Onoughquage Indians in 1766, at which an agreement was made for the purchase of lands named in their petition to the Governor and Council of the Province, which was granted.

*Delaware County, New York: History of the Century 1797-1897; by David Murray, LL.D.

The Township of Harpersfield is rich in history, having been originally formed in 1787 and being the only original town in Delaware County.

The first house was erected in 1771 by John Harper for whom the town was named. It was burned in 1777 by the Indians and Tories under Brandt and Butler.
